What is Arbitrum Orbit?
Arbitrum Orbit is a product designed to enable developers to create customizable dedicated Layer 2 (L2) or Layer 3 (L3) chains using Arbitrum technology. These Orbit chains can be optimized for specific use cases by allowing configuration of various components, including governance, gas tokens, throughput, and data availability layers. Orbit chains are built using Arbitrum Nitro's tech stack, providing scalability through rollups or AnyTrust chains.
Orbit L2 chains settle directly to Ethereum, while L3 chains can settle to L2 chains like Arbitrum One. This structure allows users to customize and decentralize their infrastructure while benefiting from Ethereum’s security.
Orbit chains provide several advantages: dedicated throughput for decentralized applications (dApps), EVM+ compatibility (enabling the use of languages like Solidity, C, C++, and Rust), reliable gas prices, account abstraction, custom gas tokens, and customizable protocol logic. These chains also maintain access to Arbitrum’s continuous updates and the flexibility to integrate rollups, AnyTrust, or custom technology stacks.
Orbit helps the Ethereum ecosystem by improving scalability, security, and governance. The customizable nature of these chains makes them suitable for various applications, from decentralized apps to private, centralized services, and even app chains.
Arbitrum Orbit facilitates interoperability between Orbit chains, although these features are still being developed. Users can launch their Orbit chain on the mainnet, with infrastructure providers like AltLayer, Caldera, Conduit, and Gelato offering services to streamline this process.
